Rethink Coke! Wins Referendum at Northland Today, in a campus-wide referendum, Northland College students voted overwhelmingly to endorse the resolution put forth to the student government by student group ReThinkCoke!. Over 50% of the student body turned out to this precedent setting referendum, and a full 84% of those voting voted to support the resolution! If this resolution is adopted by the administration it would mean: 1. The administration would not enter into further contracts with Coca-Cola 2. Northland College would adopt a business ethics clause specifying standards consistent with Northland's Sustainability Charter and reflecting the integrity of Northland's environmental mission, in order to establish guidelines for conducting future business dealings with corporations and organizations, and 3. The college would amend the decision-making procedures to allow for greater transparency when making any business decisions that directly affect students, faculty, and staff, and to further open the process to the campus community in order to encourage community participation in making such decisions. ReThinkCoke! views these as attainable goals which would not only serve for the college to end business with Coca-Cola once the contract expires, but change the way that Northland conducts business!

Other pieces highlighting the Coca-Cola system's racial discrimination: "Coca-Cola Bottling Co. settles La. discrimination case" and "How Credible is Coca-Cola?" (page 2) This article states, "Coca-Cola Femsa is the largest bottler of Coke products in Latin America. Although it is not directly owned by Coca-Cola of Atlanta, Georgia, it accounts for about 10 percent of the giant soda maker's worldwide profits." The fact is Coca-Cola IS very much a direct owner of Coca-Cola Femsa. The Coca-Cola Company owns 39.6% of the economic stock and 46.4% of the voting stock of Coca-Cola FEMSA, its largest Colombian bottler and a defendant in the Alien Tort Claims lawsuit regarding human rights abuses in Colombia. Many of Coca-Cola's highest-ranking executives serve as directors or alternate directors on Coca-Cola FEMSA's board (See relationship between Coke and Coca-Cola FEMSA). In Dec. 2003, Forbes Magazine pointed out in an article entitled "Coke's Sinful World:" "The biggest bottlers aren't subsidiaries of Coke, nor are they completely independent. Coke effectively controls them by maintaining big equity stakes and a heavy presence on their boards, and by providing their main source of business. Yet it keeps its stakes in the bottlers below 50% thereby avoiding getting hit with their piles of debt and any unpleasant liabilities." However, his assertion that Coke CEO E. Neville Isdell is "getting behind it" is dishonest. We have exposed Isdell's bogus Cal Safety report that whitewashes Coke's abuses. A statement released by United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) ( Read USAS's statement on this subject) described that report as "not credible" and "entirely unacceptable." Cal Safety has also been totally discredited in reports by such publications as The Los Angeles Times and Business Week and in a recent book entitled "Monitoring Sweatshops" by Dr. Jill Esbenshade. Patrick "agreed to serve as a legal consultant for Coca-Cola" (for $2.1 million this year). "Deval Patrick continues to make a lot of money to cover-up crimes and misdeeds of Coca-Cola and to keep his mouth shut," said Campaign Director Ray Rogers. For nearly six years, on Patrick's watch as Executive VP, Secretary and General Counsel, Coca-Cola has been involved in massive tax avoidance, corporate welfare schemes and fraudulent business practices. Patrick stated: "I am running in large part because I want to pass on a reason to hope." Hope for whom? During Patrick's tenure at Coca-Cola, the company's top executives gave themselves hundreds of millions in bonuses and stock options while laying off thousands of employees. The Coca-Cola Co. and its executives are masters of deception. They spend billions of dollars to create a public image that has nothing to do with the reality behind this company. CNN Money, "Coke aids victims of Colombian violence," Reuters, April 13, 2005 We are writing to let you know that, while the struggle is not yet over, there is a positive achievement from our efforts which we can point to. As the article linked below indicates, Coke has created a $10 million social fund to aid victims of the war in Colombia. As the article also makes clear, this was done in the midst of (and clearly because of) the Coke campaign. While we have not yet achieved everything we want to through the campaign, you should be very proud that your efforts have obtained something real and good for people in Colombia. Many times in the movement, we cannot point to such concrete gains. So, it is important to recognize them when we do; this is such an occasion. At the same time, we have not yet obtained the key demands of our struggle an affirmative commitment on the part of Coca-Cola and its bottlers to take steps to prevent such violence in the future and justice for the victims of the violence against the Coca-Cola workers in Colombia. For this, we fight on! Don't think of Coke as being generous. Remember over the past five years, Coca-Cola has laid off thousands of workers while giving its top executives hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses and stock options." For this, we fight on! We are confident that we will achieve victory. Best wishes and keep up the great work.

Boston Globe, "Labor leaders critical of Patrick" by By Frank Phillips, Feb. 8, 2005
NOTE:
"On Oct. 23, 2003, the organization Equal Justice Works honored Deval Patrick, General Counsel of Coca-Cola, for his role as an "advocate for civil rights, equality, and fairness in the workplace." Members of the Campaign to Stop Killer Coke protested the decision to give Mr. Patrick the "Scales of Justice" Award and handed out leaflets about Coca-Cola's outrageous record of human rights violations in Colombia. Several attendees at the awards ceremony in Washington expressed their own unease and anger over the organization's choice of an honoree.
"According to a statement by Terry Collingsworth, Executive Director of the International Labor Rights Fund, Patrick's activities in his current position at Coca-Cola "nullify any basis" for the award. The campaign to expose Coke's complicity is founded on the assumption that public relations gimmickry is no substitute for corporate accountability, nor should an apologist for corporate crimes be honored by any organization that claims to promote human rights.
